How to rotate a PDF permanently
- 1
Add the PDF
Drop the file in. Every page shows as a thumbnail, so a single sideways page in a long scan is easy to spot.
- 2
Rotate what needs it
Rotate individual pages or the whole document, 90° at a time in either direction. Each thumbnail updates immediately, so you're never guessing which way 'left' turned it.
- 3
Save the corrected file
Download the fixed copy. The rotation is written into the document itself, so it opens the right way up in every reader, on every device, for everyone you send it to.
Why your PDF opens sideways — and why the viewer's rotate button doesn't fix it
Scanners and phone cameras record pages in whatever orientation the paper happened to feed, then note the intended orientation in the file. When that note is wrong or missing, the page displays sideways. The rotate button in your PDF viewer only turns the page for your current viewing session — it changes your window, not the file. Email it onward and the recipient sees it sideways again, which is why the problem seems to keep coming back.
This tool changes the page's rotation entry inside the document itself. That's the permanent version of the fix: the corrected orientation travels with the file.
What rotation does and doesn't change
Rotating is lossless. Nothing is re-rendered — the page content is untouched and one number in the page's dictionary changes. Text stays selectable, image quality is identical, and file size barely moves. You can rotate the same page as many times as you like without any degradation, unlike rotating a JPEG in some editors.
One thing rotation can't do is straighten a crooked scan — a page photographed at a slight angle needs deskewing, which is a different operation. If your pages are tilted a few degrees rather than turned 90°, rescanning flat is the honest fix.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate a PDF and make it stay rotated?
Use this tool and download the result. The rotation is saved into the document's page settings, so it opens correctly in every reader. Rotating inside a viewer only changes your current session, which is why the file keeps arriving sideways for other people.
Can I rotate just one page?
Yes — each page rotates independently. This is the usual case: one landscape table or one upside-down scan in an otherwise correct document.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Rotation changes one orientation value per page; the content isn't re-rendered or re-encoded. It's completely lossless, however many times you do it.
My scan is tilted a few degrees, not sideways — can this fix it?
No, and honestly nothing here can. That's skew, not rotation, and correcting it means re-rendering the page. Rescanning with the paper flat, or a scanner app with deskew, is the real fix.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The rotation happens in your browser and the corrected file is built on your device. It works with the internet disconnected.
