Does the EPF passbook PDF have a password?
3 min read · Updated 6 October 2026
Short, honest answer: the EPF e-passbook PDF you download from the EPFO member portal or the UMANG app is not password-protected. Once it is on your device, it opens straight away — there is no PDF password to enter, and none to remove.
What has a password is the login, not the file. To reach your passbook you need your UAN and the portal password (or your UMANG credentials). People searching for an "EPF passbook PDF password" are usually mixing up the two: the login password lets you download the passbook, but the downloaded PDF itself is open.
So why won't your PF file open?
A few genuine possibilities:
- It is not finished downloading, or it is corrupt. Re-download it from the portal.
- Your reader is asking for a password on a different file. Check you are opening the passbook and not, say, a Form 16 or a bank statement that happens to be in the same folder — those are locked.
- Your employer emailed you a PF statement or settlement letter that they locked themselves. That is a different document from the EPFO passbook, and only your employer can tell you the password they set.
If you do have a locked PF-related PDF
If a PF document genuinely is password-protected — because whoever sent it locked it, and you know the password — you can remove that password so it opens directly from then on. Use Unlock PDF: it decrypts inside your browser, so the file is never uploaded. That matters for anything tied to your PF account and PAN.
For the documents that do use a standard password formula, see the Form 16 password, ITR-V password and bank statement guides.
Frequently asked questions
What is the password for the EPF passbook PDF?
There isn't one. The EPF e-passbook downloaded from the EPFO member portal or UMANG app is not password-protected — it opens directly. The password you are thinking of is the UAN/portal login password, which only lets you reach and download the passbook.
Then why is my PF file asking for a password?
Either you are opening a different file that is locked (a Form 16 or bank statement in the same folder), or your employer sent you a PF statement or settlement letter that they password-protected themselves. In the latter case, only the employer can confirm the password they set.
How do I remove the password from a locked PF document?
If a PF-related PDF is locked and you know the password, open it in the Unlock tool, enter the password, and download an unlocked copy. It decrypts in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
