e-Aadhaar PDF password: format and how to remove it

5 min read · Updated 6 October 2026

Every e-Aadhaar PDF downloaded from the UIDAI website is locked, and the password is a fixed formula UIDAI sets for everyone — you cannot change or reset it.

The e-Aadhaar password format

The password is always 8 characters: the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS + your year of birth (YYYY). The name is taken exactly as printed on your Aadhaar.

  • RAHUL KHANNA, born 2000 → RAHU2000
  • JAY KUMAR, born 2000 → JAYK2000 (the formula takes the first four letters across the name, so it reaches into the second word)
  • A name shorter than four letters uses what is there, in capitals.

It is case-sensitive, so the letters must be uppercase. Spaces are skipped.

Removing the password — but do it on your own device

Here is the part that matters more than the format. Your Aadhaar is one of the most sensitive documents you own. Never upload it to a random online "unlock Aadhaar" site. An upload-based tool receives your full Aadhaar PDF and the password that opens it, together, on a server you cannot see into — exactly the data an identity thief wants.

The Unlock PDF tool here decrypts entirely inside your browser. Your Aadhaar never leaves your device:

  1. Open Unlock PDF and add your e-Aadhaar file.
  2. Enter the password (first 4 letters of your name in capitals + birth year).
  3. Download the unlocked copy, which opens directly and keeps its real text.

You can prove nothing is sent: open your browser's Network tab while unlocking, or turn off your wifi after the page loads and do it anyway — it still works.

Should you keep an unlocked Aadhaar?

Only if you have a reason to — for example, printing it, or attaching it where the recipient genuinely needs it. An unlocked Aadhaar is easier for anyone who gets hold of the file to read, so store the unlocked copy carefully and delete it when you are done. If you want a password you control instead of UIDAI's formula, re-protect the file with one of your own. And wherever possible, share a masked Aadhaar (which hides the first 8 digits) rather than the full one.

Removing the password from your own Aadhaar is fine; doing it to someone else's document can be unlawful.

Frequently asked questions

What is the password for an e-Aadhaar PDF?

The first 4 letters of your name in capital letters, followed by your year of birth — eight characters in total. For RAHUL KHANNA born in 2000 it is RAHU2000. The name is taken exactly as printed on your Aadhaar, it is case-sensitive, and spaces are skipped.

Can I change or reset the e-Aadhaar password?

No. UIDAI sets it to a fixed formula for everyone and it cannot be changed. You can, however, remove it from your own downloaded copy and, if you want, re-protect the file with a password you choose.

Is it safe to remove the Aadhaar password online?

Only if the file is never uploaded. Aadhaar is extremely sensitive, so never use a site that sends it to a server. This tool decrypts in your browser, so your Aadhaar and its password stay on your device — you can confirm it by disconnecting from the internet first.
